Benefit From Midday Sunlight

The famous saying is that 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. are typically the worst hours for photographing people because the sunlight is harsh. This saying isn’t totally accurate. Take a look at what I turned out with my model, Mariah, and how I avoided the harsh sunlight.

Harsh sunlight helps

It was a bright, hot, sunny June Sunday afternoon when I photographed Mariah. Although the famous saying that photographing people midday is not a good idea doesn’t necessarily stop the process, with the right equipment and the proper techniques, the worst hours of the day aren’t a concern. Midday sunlight actually assists in with lighting techniques, mainly back lighting.

As you can see below for this photo shoot Mariah posed in some simple summer fashion, which consisted of the following  clothing looks:

A easy fashion look posed in the right areas with a little fill flash fill will turn out fantastic images and that is because the the harsh sunlight is moved to the back of the model. As the image results above show the harsh sunlight is only illumiating the background while my flash has only lit the foreground of Mariah.

The equipment I used

For this particular set I really didnt use alot of equipment all that was used was my Cannon R6 Mark II and one Interfit Badger Unleashed Battery-Powered Flash Head with a sock on a stand. As you can see Mariah looks marvelous and to be honest the smooth look is from the fill flash which I measured with my light meter. By measuring the flash I  was able to set the proper f-stop to achieve the proper exposure for each image and not over power the foreground with the model.

No edits involved

By taking the proper exposure I really didnt have a lot of edits maybe a few small wrinkles but for the majority of this photo shoot the model is all natural not fake. Besides the makeup on the model everything is for real.

Can I get this same look?
